Local SOUTH DAKOTA Organizer

Project Overview

United Today, Stronger Tomorrow – SD (UTST) is seeking a full-time, four-month, in-state Covid Vaccine Equity Outreach/Education Organizer. This new hire will help UTST strengthen our ongoing vaccine equity work in South Dakota with a robust vaccine outreach and education campaign focused on BIPOC and other communities impacted by Covid.

Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for two main bodies of work:

  • Direct education and outreach to target communities.
  • Assisting the UTST Organizer in building and coordinating the vaccine equity advocacy campaign.

Direct education and outreach to target communities

Working with the UTST Organizer and other stakeholders, the Covid Vaccine Outreach/Education Organizer will ID target constituencies and conduct direct 1:1 education and outreach about the vaccine and, when needed, connect people with a vaccine provider. This work will include:

  • Education and outreach to individuals. The Covid Vaccine Outreach/Education Organizer will educate and conduct outreach to individuals and community members to determine if people have received the vaccine, have not received the vaccine, and if not, ID and address barriers to receiving the vaccine. This education and outreach will be a combination of phone, text, and in-person activities, which could include: tabling at events, street outreach, organizational presentations, and canvassing. In-person activities will follow all current safety protocols.
  • Recruiting volunteers to help with education and outreach efforts. The Covid Vaccine Outreach/Education Organizer will ID people willing to volunteer to help with education and outreach efforts by text, phone, and in-person activities.
  • Broader public education efforts. The Covid Vaccine Outreach/Education Organizer will work with the UTST Organizer and Digital Team to build and implement public education campaigns including social media, earned media, and other efforts that reach targeted communities.
  • Organize community campaign meetings. The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach Organizer will, with the support of the UTST Organizer, organize and lead community campaign meetings.

Assisting the UTST Organizer in building and coordinating the vaccine equity advocacy campaign

The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach Organizer will support the UTST organizer and the campaign to improve the delivery of vaccines by government and other agencies. This work will include:

  • Monitoring conditions on the ground. The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach Organizer will monitor conditions on the ground to better understand vaccine programs and access to them, in order to communicate successes and challenges to the government and agency providers.
  • Identifying ways to improve communication. The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach Organizer will ID ways to improve communication between service providers and community leaders and state and agency officials in implementing vaccine programs.
  • Increasing access to the vaccine. The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach
  • Organizer will work to increase access to the vaccine and vaccine sites in BIPOC and other communities through data collection with service providers, advocates, and others and setting up meetings with public agencies at the state and local level.
  • Providing input into the creation of a feedback loop. The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach Organizer will provide input into the creation of a feedback loop with vaccine providers and will facilitate opportunities to ID challenges, opportunities, and best practices in vaccine provision and access.
  • Monitoring and documenting challenges. The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach Organizer will monitor and document challenges in vaccine provision, distribution, and access and will provide concrete examples to officials.
  • Identifying stories. The Covid Vaccine Education/Outreach Organizer will ID individual stories to lift up in social media and other outlets.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualities and experience:

  • Community education and outreach, particularly high volume 1:1 contacts with people through face-to-face, phone, or peer-to-peer texting strategies. Working on an electoral campaign’s GOTV, voter registration, or education program can substitute for this experience.
  • Ability to evaluate and assess local, on-the-ground conditions, including what programs, techniques, and tools are working and which are not. Then documenting this information and communicating it to others.
  • Experience recruiting organizations, volunteers, and/or the general public into a project, campaign, or body of work.
  • Strong documentation, tracking, and communication skills to help assess how vaccine efforts are operating; to capture conversations, 1:1s, and outreach efforts; and to communicate with a wide array of communities and members. This includes an ability
  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English is HIGHLY preferred. Because we are targeting Spanish speaking communities, basic Spanish proficiency is preferred.
  • Ability to travel in-state, to work off and online and in a community setting, and to conduct in-person outreach either canvassing at doors, tabling at events, or presenting at organizations.
  • Familiarity with the CRM Nation Builder and the texting tool Spoke.

Compensation

  • $800 a week full-time. This will include evenings and potentially weekends.
